UPDATE from HOLLY EDMONDSTON - INAUGURAL LEADING ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT #5
With our second round of applications now open, here's an update from the last of our 5 first round Leading Athlete Scholarship recipients - Holly Edmondston (Cycling):

The last year has consisted of 5 months overseas, visiting England, Italy, Belgium, Germany, France and Canada.. in each and every place I went with intent and a fighting spirit with the cycling NZ track team and made some massive gains towards medalling at Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The overseas campaign mainly consisted of training up mountains or racing hard and fast races on the road and on the velodrome, I pulled most of my success from the Track racing with a consistent top 3 placings among world class riders all racing to gain points for the upcoming World Cups.
Now, recently I have returned from two back to back Track world cups in France and Canada, I am now proud to have two medals (silver & bronze) hanging on the wall for the Teams Pursuit in which we also broke the New Zealand record, the record which was posted at the previous Rio Olympics.

So I am confident to say our team up here in Cambridge is fast track on the way to some great things in the future, there are many women contending and pushing each other for the 5 spots in the team, there’s a healthy energy and I’m proud to be among them all.
We also have a new coach on board who has shown us commitment and we all drive each other to do our best.

My nearest goals are to compete in the Cambridge World Cup here, practically on my front doorstep! It will be immense to race in front of a home crowd once again and push new limits towards my BIG short term goal in riding Track World Champs late feb/early march 2019.

UPDATE from LAUREN BRUCE - INAUGURAL LEADING ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT #4
With our second round of applications now open, here's an update from another one of our first round recipients - Lauren Bruce (Athletics):

My 2018 year began with an attempt to qualify for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, however, falling short of the qualifying standard meant watching from the grandstand this time round. Despite not reaching my main goal, I still had much to look forward to, heading off in May to continue my season for a further six weeks in Europe. During this time I trained and competed with some of the best hammer throwers in the world, learning an incredible amount about my sport and myself. What I gained from doing this stands me in good stead for the season ahead and I must take this opportunity to express how grateful I am for the support of Aspect in helping make it possible.
Returning home, I took the chance to take a few months off and settle in to some semblance of normal life, finishing off my University degree and dabbling in some other sports. After a much shorter preparation, this season seems to have come around incredibly fast, but I have been enjoying putting in the hard work with a renewed passion and appreciation for the sport. Having completed my study, I will remain based in Christchurch with my focus shifting towards qualifying for the FISU World University Games and IAAF World Championships next year.

To say the least, this year has been the most testing yet rewarding to date, but it has made me excited for what is to come. Thank you once again to Aspect Trust and the people of South Canterbury for their continued support. Here’s to throwing far ! ...
