World event worth the effort

South Canterbury triathlete James Katene has “battled” his way to the finish line in Canada for district and country. Katene (20), of Timaru,represented New Zealand at the Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, from August 26 to September 1.
The event, Katene’s first world championship, was tough, but worth the effort.
“I was ranked 38th in the 20-24 age goup [after] doing a good time and a personal best…
There were about 74 athletes at the start line in my age group, so I was very happy with the
middle—field finish at my first world champs event,” he said.
“I had a geat few days leading into the main event – I was focused and ready to give it my
best.”
Katene’s times were 1hr10min for the sprint-distance triathlon, 11min31sec for the 750m swim, 33min for a 20km bike ride and 20min16sec for his 5km run.
“I have to say that it was hard and very competitive, but I had a great race leaving it all out on the course and knowing that I couldn’t have done anything else. I did my best,” he said.
