2024 LEADING ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP #3
ASPECT Trust announce the third recipient of our 2024 Leading Athlete Scholarships – TOM TAIAROA (Bowls).
Tom is certainly “grabbing life by the bowls” but then the sport has always been in his blood, with Tom playing from the age of 12 and following in his late Dad Graham’s footsteps.
“Dad used to play at Park and when it closed went to West End. He also did a lot of green keeping work at Park and Kia Toa. I was always involved growing up and it was just a natural progression.’’
Post school University studies took precedence however Tom got back into bowls properly in 2020 and what a few years its been. Strong performances at the 2022 NZ Champion of Champions Fours (Bronze) and then the 2023 NZ Open Championships & 2023 Oceania Challenge Series (Gold – Men’s Fours & Silver Men’s Triples) has seen Tom selected in the 2024-25 NZ Wider Training Squad.
As one of 18 athletes in the training squad Tom’s primary objective is gaining selection for the 2025 World Championships in Hong Kong and after that the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
In the meantime there are 3 national events across NZ to attend along with another 6 regional events across the South Island.
“ I have an unwavering commitment to maximizing my opportunities within the current NZ Squad. My dedication is evident through the time and effort I consistently invest in honing my skills and contributing to the team’s success. Additionally, I actively contribute to our local club by serving on the board and taking on the role of treasurer, showcasing my commitment to the growth and well-being of our sporting community.”
Tom – you are certainly one very busy, dedicated and focused athlete. We wish you all the best in the months and years ahead and are thrilled to be part of your journey.
